Luke hadn't thought that the girl could get much prettier if she tried, yet as she grinned at him his chest tightened. It was as if light was glowing from her skin, pouring out in rays that smothered any sadness it came across. A normal man would have returned it, but all Luke did was frown deeper, examining his reaction rather than allowing himself to respond. It didn't last long enough, and he hoped his rudeness hadn't been the reason.
Nate, so that was his name. Luke turned and glanced over his shoulder at the severe seeming man, whose attention was fixed on them and didn't move even when Luke caught his eye. He wondered what the cause of his animosity could be, and immediately the most obvious answer presented itself. They were most likely an item, a couple who ran the shop together as he'd seen many times before. Nate wasn't unattractive, but in Luke's opinion he didn't seem deserving of the pretty redhead.
Resisting the urge to scowl at the wizard, Luke faced her once more. "I work in Gringotts, as a guard. Interesting is pushing it, but it pays the bills." He'd never felt ashamed of his job before, but suddenly he realized how unimpressive his work was. He'd been in the odd dangerous situation, but ninety percent of it was dull and didn't require any skill. "You sound like you know people well, that's a useful skill, you'd be surprised how many can't read others. I have misunderstood people too much in my life, you should appreciate it." No emotion leaked through his words, yet he could hear the tone, telling her there was more he wasn't saying. He glanced at his watch, a Muggle token he'd been given years before and was disheartened to see how little time he had left. If he continued to talk to the girl, he would miss his lunch altogether. "I should pay for this, your partner will wonder what we have to discuss that takes so long."
