Eveleen looked back at Sophia, her dark eyes going a bit wide and eyebrows knitting together. She bit into her lip and looked away, taking a moment to think. It was a lot of information, most unbelievable if Eveleen was to be honest, and it could be quite embarrassing if Sophia didn't believe her. There was more life at stake though than just the question of Eveleen's integrity.
"In the beginning of the school year I was and a few other students were asked to clean out the hut for the new Creatures Professor, Blackwell." Eveleen began quietly her eyes now trained on the complicated knot of hands resting on her lap. She shifted slightly, but her eyes did not waver.
"One night I was by myself and I heard rustling from not far in the woods. Worrying one of the creatures had gotten away, I . . . went after it." Eveleen then sighed. It was simply foolish what she had done, how Eveleen had entered the Forbidden Forest, a place very much, well, forbidden.
"Into the forest." Eveleen finished, but suddenly, her eyes flashed up, her dark penetrating gaze pinning the witch opposite, "Sophia you won't believe what I saw, what I found."
"The wolves, that Dumbledore said so long ago lived in the Forest, the offspring of turned werewolves, I found one." The witch said hurriedly, color working into her cheeks the more worked up she got.
"But something was terribly wrong, terribly wrong. She was injured you see, with a long gash along her side, and I know it was a female because she was a mother. Three pups were with her. Do you have any idea what that means?" Eveleen whisper shouted, her hands moving to grip the table.
"Wolves are pack animals, they live together around dens, and when they are out they do not take pups and they never go alone as they can't hunt alone. These wolves in particular do not come near the edge, lest they be killed because of how close they get to the students." Eveleen rambled, her excessive knowledge of creatures making herself known.
"But this gash was wide and. . . and. . . " Eveleen's eyes began to water "It wasn't healing. I was able to hide her and the pups for sometime, taking over sole responsibility for the Hut, but she was just bleeding, so much, to the point I had no idea how she was alive. Sophia the marks, they looked like those caused by sectumsempra, but they wouldn't be healed the same." Eveleen wiped rather ungracefully the tears that had been welling up in her eyes and forced her face hard again.
"Finally I told Duane and we had to do a very . . . complicated healing spell. It was a last hope, but it worked, some what. The wound closed, but I had to tend it for some time, like an abrasion. Sophia, something unnatural is in the woods, something dangerous that is attacking the forest's second strongest predator." Eveleen looked again grave, but then flinched back, withdrawing as her future words played out in her head.
"I wanted to know what it was though." Eveleen said softly after a few drawn out moments of silence. "What could split up a centuries old wolf pack? So, naturally I researched. Nothing. No leads as to why, there is far too much mixed history in the Forest, so I took to. . . time. I found a very old scrying spell from the restricted section and performed it, but what I saw . . ." Eveleen fell silent again and simply looked away, at the book cases, lost to her own memories, trying to make sense of what she saw months ago.
