As he spoke, Maddie's heart tightened in her chest. She could tell how much pain this caused him, to relive this horrifying memory of his mother and she almost wished she hadn't asked. When his watering eyes looked up to meet hers when he was done speaking, she realized that she was also crying. A few tears had begun making their way down her cheeks and she knew why. Just the thought of Logan, a little boy with bright, blue eyes, watching his mother die in his arms at the age of seven made her heart ache for him. She had been wrong. His loss was much more significant than hers - her father had gotten sick, he hadn't taken his own life. Nobody should ever have to go through something like that, especially not a little boy. And from the looks of it, the memory still haunted Logan, his eyes were glassy with tears and she immediately wanted to comfort him somehow.
She was speechless. The only thing she could think to do was wrap her arms around his neck, pulling herself closer to him so that she could hug him tightly. It might not have been the right thing to do, but she had to do something. She was still sitting on his lap, but the distance between them had felt significant as he had relived his past and she couldn't take it any longer. All she wanted to do was take away his pain and his suffering. The warmth of his body soothed her and she once again ran her fingers through the coarse hair at the back of his neck. "I'm so sorry, Logan," she whispered, her lips brushing his ear. He'd probably heard it a thousand times but it was the only thing she could think of to say. It was hard to believe he'd shared something so personal with her, it was obvious he didn't talk about it with just anyone. That fact made her hopeful, maybe they could be more than whatever this was. Maybe they had a chance.
