Table for Two

Caroline made her way into the library, mentally preparing herself for the mammoth load of homework that she was determined to complete within the next few hours. On her shoulder she hefted a sturdy bag that contained all of her textbooks, parchment and quills that she would need, the weight of it making her body sag to one side. In her head, she went through her checklist of what she wanted to get done - an essay, a couple of worksheets and some studying for an exam. It seemed like a lot but she was sure she would get through it without any trouble, it was just making sure that she stayed awake for the next few hours to get it done that might cause the problem. But she would suck it up, just like she always did. She wouldn't let her exhaustion show and she would push through her work without fault because that's just who she was. If she wanted any chance at being Head Girl next term she needed to maintain her spotless grade record.
She had skipped dinner to come to the library, wanting to get a jump start on her work before the evening crowd filed in so the large room was fairly empty aside from the librarian and a few others. Caroline made her way to the back of the library, towards her usual table that was secluded from the others. She had been using this particular spot since her second year and over the years it had just become...hers. Nobody bothered her when she was there and she worked best when sitting there, tapping her fingers against the old, splitting wood. But when she turned the corner and her usually empty table came into view, she immediately stopped in her tracks.
Bloody hell, she cursed silently to herself. Of all people to be sitting at her table, it had to be him. Jason Colt's arrogant blonde head was bent down towards the table - her table - engrossed in whatever he was working on. Caroline instantly scowled at him, even though he wasn't looking, the sight of him putting her in a foul mood and she would have turned around and walked out if she wasn't so proud. Jason Colt was the definition of an arrogant prat and Caroline had hated him since they started school together. He thought he was so much better than everyone else, constantly belittling people and bragging about how smart he was. He and Caroline have had their fair share of encounters over the years and none of them have been pretty.
She should have walked away, she really should have but she couldn't let him sit there. It was her table and the git probably knew it too and was just doing it to get on her nerves - something he did quite frequently. She couldn't let him get away with it. Taking a deep breath she marched up to the table, making sure her eyes were hard and cold, though they tended to be that way whenever she was around him. She crossed her arms over her chest and cleared her throat, catching the boy's attention. "Move," she almost growled and locked her jaw, ready for the fight that was sure to follow.
