Jem hadn't seen Mackenna in nearly two weeks. It was strange for Jem as since they had met during the summer, they had been quick friends. Had it been the girl was just avoiding him, he wouldn't have spared it too much thought. In Jem's opinion, Mackenna was far too smart for him. She was an individual, a dreamer, a deep thinker, she was so far beyond him it was amazing she graced him with her presence. The thing was though, she wasn't just avoiding him. She was gone, completely so. The raven haired Slytherin could not be found, she was even absent from classes. Jem missed her, and upon her absence realized he missed her a lot more than he should. He had even convinced Joeseph to do some snooping but all he found out was that their were only four people who could possibly know; McGonagall, who didn't release private information, Will, her boyfriend who Jem felt to awkward to ask, Duane Davis, Mackenna's cousin who was frostier than his family member, and the last lad's girlfriend, a tiny Ravenclaw. Jem had approached the girlfriend, but all she did was give him a hard look that made Jem think she either didn't know or that she felt it really wasn't any of his business. He wanted to try asking the cousin but where ever the bloke was, the Ravenclaw was with him, hard dark eyes daring Jem to even attempt to come near them. Jem was left without answers.
It was on the eighth night of her absence, Jem began to loose sleep. He had given her a week, maybe she was skipping, trying to miss an assignment, but something in Jem knew there was more to it. Something was wrong. Two day after, on the tenth night, Jem took to wandering the halls. He had stopped going to parties, and even his best mate James couldn't cheer him up. Everything felt duller without Mackenna, almost pointless. Jem told himself he wasn't looking for her though when he was wondering the halls, he knew the girl well by now, he knew that she just might want space. Despite himself, Jem found himself looking for her, around corners, in class rooms, and often out on the campus beneath the willow by the lake as if she'd just been there thinking, almost waiting for him to find her.
Of course this didn't happen and the sleepless nights were taking there toll, he averaged about eight hours a week now and he thought himself a bit mental. Class made even less sense than usual and he started to crave being alone. It was strange, all he could do was think about Mackenna, worry about her. All his music just sounded like white noise and even quidditch was a chore.
On the thirteenth night Jem was wondering the seventh floor. He figured he'd explore the astronomy wing, as astronomy was the last class he saw Mackenna in. Of course he told himself he wasn't looking for her, but it was a hard fought battle. Jem opened the door to the astronomy tower and lazily strolled up the metal steps, his heavy foot steps echoing as he dragged his fingers against the harsh stone. Eventually, Jem came to the top where he entered the small circular room, moonlight pouring in through the sole window. Something was interfering with the light though. A shadowed, tall form stood in front of the window, messy dark locks caught on a gentle night breeze. For a moment Jem thought he was seeing things, or possibly dreaming, dozing had become something he had started to do. She was there though, solid, her back to him.
"Mackenna?" Jem breathed, quite unsure of himself.
