Evie had only just noticed that he wasn’t right next to her and she turned slightly to see that he had slowed and was now a few feet behind her. She wondered if her comment had offended him, like she’d gone too far. What was she thinking anyways? She shouldn’t have said that outright, surely it had to have been out of line. Luke probably thought she was some kind of weird girl with a childish crush on him now. He’d probably never look at her the same again.
She was just about to utter an apology when he closed the distance between them in two quick strides of his long legs. His arm wrapped around her waist and pulled her to the side and in the next second, she was being pressed up against the brick wall of one of the buildings. Luke’s hand had moved to her stomach, pushing her back firmly and her belly tingled from the pressure of it, practically lighting her body on fire. What was he doing? How had the mood just changed so quickly? Evie’s nerves kicked into high gear and her breathing became unsteady, she felt like she was panting. Never had anyone made her feel so vulnerable before but Luke did something to her, invaded her like nobody else ever had and she was like putty in his hands.
He towered over her and she had to crane her neck to look up at him but the fact that he was so much bigger than she was thrilled her. She felt utterly safe and secure. His scent filled her nostrils and his chest pressed against hers as he raised his hand and placed it against the wall, completely caging her in now. Her heart was beating so hard she thought that it might burst out of her chest. How did he not hear it? She was surrounded by him on all sides and the only thing she could do was stare up into his stormy blue eyes that were slowly moving closer to her. She stopped breathing all together as she watched his tongue slide along his lower lip, their noses just barely brushing. She knew what was going to happen, knew what he was doing and in that moment, despite her nerves, she wanted it more than anything. She had wanted Luke to kiss her since the moment she saw him in the bookshop. So she tilted her head slightly and closed her eyes just as his nose brushed hers.
She felt his cool breath on her lips, could feel his mouth hovering just inches over hers. One move from either of them and they would have collided and Evie was about to move when a door was pulled open with such immense forced that it was thrown into the wall right next to where Luke currently had her pressed. Evie jumped from the impact, looking towards the sound of the glass shaking and the handle slamming into the bricks as someone stomped inside of the shop, obviously not happy about something. Luke had straightened from the sound, ultimately putting enough distance in between them for Evie to realize what had almost just happened. She calmed her breathing and looked around the street, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear as she caught Luke’s eye again. “Are you okay?” she asked although she wasn't sure why. She was still a bit breathless and her heart still hadn’t slowed but it was the last thing on her mind right then.
