The Bag of Books

Evie set the last of the books on top of the counter and let out a breath of relief, having just retrieved the last one from the very top of one of the bookcases and she’d nearly toppled off of the stool that she was standing on. The stack totaled to five thick tomes that were to be delivered to one Dorothea McAdams down on Rigby Street, just around the corner from Knockturn Alley, one of the most dangerous streets in London, but it wasn’t the street that Evie found herself worrying about. No, instead it was the brown hair and blue eyes of Luke Baxter who had practically demanded that he accompany her on the outing today that had her mind all in a frenzy. She couldn’t think straight around the handsome wizard but she found herself irrevocably attracted to him in ways that she never could have imagined before. He had somehow ingrained himself into her life in just the few short hours that they’d spent together and she still wasn’t entirely sure if it was a good thing yet.
She leaned against the counter and nervously adjusted the dark tawny scarf that was looped around her neck and checked the clock that hung on the wall behind the register. It was nearly nine and Luke still wasn’t anywhere in sight. Perhaps he was standing her up. The thought made her stomach clench tightly with unease and she hoped that wasn’t the case. He still had a few minutes and he was the type of man to be right on time.
“I still don’t understand why he thinks that he has to go with you. You’ve gone plenty of times before and have been perfectly fine,” Nate chastised from behind the counter. Ever since she’d told him that Luke would be coming by he’d been in a grumpy mood and was acting extremely bitter towards her for no reason. Evie tried to ignore it but she didn’t like the tone of his voice when he talked about Luke, it made her slightly annoyed. “I've told you already, Nate, he’s just going to make sure that I make it through Knockturn safely, that’s all,” she told him firmly though she tried not to sound nasty.
Luke hadn’t actually said that he was going to come with her, but there was no way the man would come all the way down to Flourish and Blotts just to look at the books she was taking with her. They may have only spent a few hours together but Evie felt like she’d known Luke for years. He’d been completely astonished that she had gone through Knockturn Alley by herself, there was no way he was going to allow her to do it again. His protectiveness made Evie’s heart warm and beat a bit faster in her chest, just as it usually did when she thought about Luke.
Nate scoffed in disgust. “Bloke sounds like a right twat honestly. If you ask me I think it’s just an excuse for him to get into your bed.” Evie rolled her eyes and was just about to give a retort that would defend Luke when the bell chimed, indicating that someone had just entered the store. The witch whipped around so fast she nearly got a head rush but she couldn’t stop the wide grin that spread across her face as she stared at Luke. “Hey,” she breathed, all of the air leaving her lungs in that moment and her nerves kicked into high gear once again.
