So cut through the heart, cold and clear.

Noxie hugged her robes tightly around herself as she walked, head down, to the Great Hall for breakfast. Her hair was an absolute mess, tangled and unbrushed as though she just hadn’t bothered with it in weeks. She didn’t look very clean either to be honest, like showering was also something she’d given up on. No, Noxie was pretty much in a mixed state of still being in shock and being aware of her surroundings enough to continue going about her days in an almost robotic state. What had happened between her and Zeke Noble in the potions’ store room just over two weeks ago had completely unwound her. She’d eat breakfast, but completely avoided lunch and dinner, making it almost completely impossible to see the Gryffindor boy in-between classes, and when not in class, well, she was doing her homework or hiding beneath her bed. She wasn’t quite sure why she hadn’t perked back up yet though. She was used to her mother deciding to parent and then have her go back to her usual ways within a few days, why should it be any different with Zeke? She’d gotten him for the time she had, and now… Well, she’d resolved that she deserve him. All she did was make him uncomfortable or break his nose.
And yet, she wasn’t dealing with it as well as she thought she might if she just gave it a week and now it’d been two.
Moving through the crowd of students pushing their way in or out of the Great Hall, Noxie found her way over to the Hufflepuff table where she took the closest empty seat to the door. There was no one around her, most everyone having eaten already, which was nice. She was just reaching for the pitcher of orange juice when the squawking and flapping of owls sounded from above. The mail was here. Noxie looked up, wondering if her siblings had written her at all. It would be nice if they had. She missed them something terrible lately.
Noxie actually perked up for a moment as an owl landed in front of her and held out his leg. Oh! She did have a letter, it must be… She blinked. There was no letter attached to the bird’s leg, but rather, a little wrapped brown paper package tied up with string. That was odd. Her siblings never usually sent her packages. Maybe Aster’s work was going better than expected or perhaps Carval was playing a joke and it would be a pair of underwear or something along those lines. Or maybe the owl was simply confused as to whom it was delivering to and the package wasn’t for her at all.
Reaching out a hand, Noxie untied the package from the owl’s leg and gazed down at the scrawling on the paper. Nope. It was most definitely her name on the front of it. Weird. Noxie pulled the strings apart and tore open the paper, curious as to what on earth the package could be. Maybe one of the other students was playing a joke on her… A lot of people had been mean to her since the incident with Bianca. The other girl was very upper-class after all, and so a lot of people wanted to get on her good side. Inside the usual wizarding package wrappings was nothing more than a simple white box. Noxie frowned, hoping nothing was about to jump out at her, and pulled the lid off the box.
Yes. This was a joke. It had to be.
Sitting inside the box on a thin layer of tissue paper was a very simple little bracelet. Noxie lifted it from the box, waiting for it to burn her skin or something, but it was simply cool from the outside. A silver band so thin it could almost have been mistaken for a piece of wire and sitting long-ways upon it… A maple leaf.
Noxie almost dropped it, eyes widening as she stared at the leaf, her brain flashing back to the fall when she’d been rolling in a pile of leaves with…
Was there a card?
Noxie pulled the tissue paper out of the box to reveal a small note written on a piece of parchment.
Noxie felt as though she’d been punched in the stomach. Just when she was feeling a little better (okay, not really, that was a lie), this had to happen. Maybe it was a joke, but then again, she recognized Zeke’s handwriting. And there was no one else who would have known about the maple leaf.
Noxie felt all the feelings welling up inside of her again like they had back in the store room. She wasn’t sure how to deal with this or why she’d received his gift so late… However, did he even still want her to have it after all that had happened? Surely it should go to…
“Ooo, a shiny little trinket. Looks quite inexpensive.” Bianca’s voice cut Noxie to the core and she looked up, gripping the bracelet much tighter now.

Noxie
Happy Christmas
