Is This A Date?

Oxford Street was insanely crowded as Evie weaved her way through the swarm of people who were out enjoying the festivities of the annual street fair. Ever since she had moved to London, Evie had attended the event, having enjoyed it just as much as the rest of the muggles around her. It was uncommon for witches and wizards to be interested in such a thing but she found the street fair incredibly fascinating and extremely fun. She never had a dull time when she came, she was always able to find something fun to do. Her brother usually came with her but he was tied up at work unfortunately and had cancelled on her at the last minute. She had almost wound up not coming but as she was leaving work yesterday afternoon, Nate had stopped her and asked if she would like to go with him. Not thinking anything of it, Evie had agreed eagerly, glad to not have to go on her own, though a small part of her resented her decision to go with Nate. Did he assume this was a date? Should she assume it was? She couldn't be sure and she wasn't going to ask.
She was feeling much better, her little cold having gone within hours of Luke leaving her flat. The soup had done wonders and the candle he had bought her was fantastic and she was back to herself in no time. Evie had wanted to find Luke and thank him yet again for what he had done – she probably would have still been sick if he hadn’t shown up. She still could hardly believe that he had and the question as to why still plagued her mind. She had gone over the situation thousands of times in her head but every time her answers came up empty. There was no rhyme or reason to Luke, he just was and that was it.
If she had thought that her dreams had been bad before, they were even worse now. Whenever she seemed to close her eyes she saw him – only him and not anyone else. Nobody had ever taken up so much space in her mind before, nobody had ever frequented her dreams as much as Luke did. Evie was constantly surrounded by him, even when he wasn’t anywhere near her. She could feel his fingers on her skin even when they weren’t there. It was insane and Evie was starting to wonder if she was going crazy.
Beside her, Nate sighed and brushed her shoulder with his own. The movement jolted her, but not in the way that she had grown so used to with Luke. It was completely different and it was obvious to her though she tried not to make it seem so to him. “Does the crowd ever die down?” he asked, leaning a bit too close for her liking but she said nothing about it, just turned her head away from him as if she were looking at something else. “People run into you left and right, how can you even stand to walk around?” Evie just shrugged and offered him an indifferent smile. “I enjoy it. It’s exhilarating.”
Truthfully, she wasn’t having nearly as much fun as she usually had. She was grateful that Nate had offered to take her but it wasn’t the same. Nate was….he didn’t understand the meaning of things like this. He was too reliable on magic for entertainment while Evie would rather leave her wand at home. Still, she was trying her hardest to have a good time. “Would you like to play a game?” she asked, nodding towards a booth that Evie had played before and absolutely adored. “What is it?” Nate inquired, wrinkling his nose at the scene. “You throw darts at the balloons hanging on the wall and if you pop a certain number in a row, you win a prize!” She beamed at him excitedly, silently hoping that he would want to indulge her. He seemed to consider it for a moment before shaking his head. “Absolutely not, it’s quite foolish if you ask me. Let’s find something else.”
He grabbed her hand then and Evie swiftly turned to look at him with wide eyes but he was already leading her in a different direction. Her hand felt foreign in his, his skin was rough and dry and the feeling made her slightly uncomfortable. Nate didn’t look back at her as he dragged her along after him towards a small beverage vender. She tried to pry her hand loose but he held it firmly and Evie’s skin prickled, though it wasn’t from excitement. She didn’t like holding his hand. It felt….wrong. Completely and utterly wrong.
