Even though Luke apologized for Mitch’s behavior, she could tell that he really cared for the man. Evie had quickly figured out in her mind that Luke wasn’t the type of person who cared about everyone in their own special way – no, he had a select few that he would most likely do anything for and that was it. She was happy to know that Mitch was probably one of those people but still, in the back of her head, she wondered about the large man’s words. Evie wanted to ask Luke, wanted to know who this woman was and why it was that she reminded Mitch of his ex. But really, she had no right to ask. They were only just holding hands now, she had no claim over Luke whatsoever.
She smiled triumphantly up at him as he moved her slightly, positioning her to give her a better view but she really only noticed how much closer it put their bodies. She was standing somewhat in front of him now, her shoulder pressing against his chest but their fingers were still locked together and every time Luke ran his thumb over her knuckles, a shiver ran down her spine and she would squeeze his hand softly. “I knew you’d like that one,” she said, feeling proud of herself for having such a good judge of character. From the moment she had seen Luke, she knew she liked him and the feeling had only seemed to grow since that day in the bookstore.
Evie looked up at him as he smiled and she nearly melted. Luke’s smiles were so rare and yet so breathtaking that Evie couldn’t help but notice them every time they happened. “Come by anytime. I’m there every day except for Sundays and days like today when we’re closed. But I will gladly help you find another book.” Her eyes locked on his gaze, completely forgetting about the parade for a moment. She just wanted to admire him while she could, so that when he plagued her thoughts later that night when she was alone again, he would be as vivid as if he were standing right there in front of her.
