All Mimsy Were the Borogoves

Lily rapidly tugged her hair back into a messy pony tail, shoved her feet into her shoes, and pulled on her robes as she raced out of her dorm and through the Hufflepuff Common Room. She had just received an urgent owl from Lorcan Scamander stating that Lysander was up to some kind of mischief by the forest again. Apparently the boy had been reading something in the library about there being some kind of large lion-turtle creature living in the Forbidden Forest again. There was no way Lily was going to leave Lorcan to deal with this one on his own, especially since Lysander didn’t always listen to a voice of reason. It would be second year all over again, when the Hufflepuff twin had been hoarding creatures in an empty classroom to keep them out of the cold winter air. She had narrowly avoided detention for almost getting involved in that one. She had quite enjoyed playing with the Nifflers though.
It didn’t take long for Lily to make it out of the castle and started her way down the grounds towards the forest. In the distance she could make out a figure, smaller than herself, with darker hair. She frowned. It was obviously another student and a younger one at that. She certainly hoped they weren’t pondering stepping foot among the trees. Not only was the forest full of dangerous creatures, but, if you strayed from the path, it was very easy to get lost.
Concern filling her, Lily decided that the twins could wait a couple of minutes at least. She needed to make sure the younger student was only looking and not contemplating actually going into the forest. It would have been one thing if they were say, older, like her brother James, but they were so small they couldn't have been barely a first year with an August birthday.
Lily neared the girl, yes, it was a girl, and put on a bright smile, always happy to meet a new potential friend. She paused slightly, the gorgeous dark hair and child-like face taking her slightly off guard and only getting more pronounced by the fact that she could have sworn she'd heard the girl say something to a nearby tree. Was she speaking to the plants? Oh well, to each their own. Maybe the kid was lonely or something. “Hello there.”
