Ember sighed, clutching the bouquet of wild flowers she had gathered just a half hour or so ago in both hands, gazing downwards at the small hole she and Eveleen Swan had dug into the perfectly manicured ground of the Quidditch pitch and then filled with all of the shrapnel and splinters they could find, the remains of Ember's most beloved Nimbus 2000. They technically were not supposed to be digging holes in the pitch, it being seen as a highly offensive thing by some people, and yet, there was not a single place better, a Ember thought, to hold the funeral for her broomstick, than here. She and Nimbus had had some fantastic times on the pitch, perfected so many stunts, played so many Quidditch games, beaten Cole Wainwright at a race even with a broken arm... Yeah, this was a place of memories. A place her broom would be happy to rest, as it's soul gazed down upon them from the big pitch in the sky.
It was also the last place she'd flown on that damn broom, before Morgan had blown it to smithereens. She could still see it bursting against the sun setting sky sometimes when she looked up. Eveleen had graciously suggested they give the Nimbus a proper funeral, to which Ember had been more than grateful. Eveleen got it, she knew the Nimbus had been more than just some dumb old broom to a Ember. And it was just the two of them now, saying good bye to it. ember had been tempted to invite along Sophia Black, but part of her just wanted Eveleen today. There was an odd kind of comfort in it, just standing with her best mate. That, and there was no way Ember could talk to Eveleen about... Certain things she had been feeling lately in her loins if Sophia was around. She knew Eveleen would have some advice for her, or teasing words if not. Mostly a Ember just needed to talk about what had been happening inside her before she exploded.
But they could do that later. Right now was the time to remember, and honor, the dear sweet Nimbus she had truly learned to fly upon.
"Eveleen, would you say some words before I put the big piece in?" Ember asked quietly, knowing if she tried to speak about her broom, she might not be able to stop, or worse, start crying. It had been bad enough that she'd bawled and puked in front of Sophia... She had felt extremely embarrassed when she'd gotten back to her dorm that night. What a weakling she must have looked... And yet, the Hufflepuff hadn't seemed to mind.
