A Factual Lesson in the Delicacies of Rice Balls

Aito blinked, staring at the younger boy as he spoke, seeming genuinely concerned that his comment had been taken in such a way. It had just been one of those offhand things, that, without knowing a person better, could be seen as rude. Since Aito didn’t know Axel really at all, having barely met the Gryffindor, it had been interpreted as such, especially because Aito was particularly defensive when it came to the elves in the first place. They were his first friends at Hogwarts, even before Max who was… well, his only friend really. Well, aside from Alkawari, but she wasn’t so much as friend as she was an enigma of a girl. He had no idea what to call that particular relationship. He supposed they were friends as well, if you could refer to a girl leaping across a table, tackling you and your chair down, and kissing you without your permission just to stake some kind of ‘claim’ upon you friendship… It wasn’t Alkawari’s fault though, that she had come from such a different culture where such things were considered socially acceptable or even encouraged. He had tried not to judge her quickly for it, despite being completely scared shitless, and now, well, perhaps he had jumped a little to fast into what kind of person Axel was.
The Slytherin also recognized Axel’s reaction, one he had actually experienced a lot himself. The body language, the way his shoulders were set and he seemed to have gone a bit into himself when he had been so much more, well, open earlier. A bit stiff maybe, but definitely more open. Now he seemed to be… Oh geez. Aito shook his head, quickly striding across the bit of floor that separated him from the younger boy. He reached out, one large hand falling gently upon the much shorter Gryffindor’s shoulder, a kind smile on his face. ”Nah, mate, you’re fine. The house elves are just easy targets for harassment, so I tend to get a little over-protective too quickly sometimes. Of course you didn’t mean it that way.” He released the boy, but only momentarily. Aito’s arm went up and flung around Axel’s shoulders, a completely natural thing for Aito. He gave the younger boy a slight tug, pointing towards where some of the elves had returned to working on the rice balls. They were almost finished, but there was no reason the two students couldn’t help.
”Besides, we’ve still got food to make. I promised my other friend I’d bring her some, and trust me when I say, you do not want to get on the wrong side of Danara. She’s in your house actually, tends to get in a lot of fights?” Aito grinned, reaching up his other hand and pressing his knuckles gently down into Axel’s skull, giving him a gentle noogie. ”And you also haven’t tried one yet, and that, mate, would be considered quite a folly, as they are, if I do say so myself, quite fantastic. Trust me, you do not want to miss out on the onigiri.”
