Whispers in the Hollow

”You can put the wet ones in my hamper.” Ember smiled, pointing to the corner beside the dresser where her wicker hamper sat, just in front of a full length mirror that was leaned against the wall, kept in place by the hamper itself. “And anything dirty that's left over from the past week too. We do do laundry here you know.” The redhead winked and shut the door behind herself, leaving Sophia alone in her bedroom. She headed down the hallway to the bathroom and changed quickly, wringing out her hair slightly but removing it from her pony tail, the slight lanky curls hanging down her back, all twisted and a mess as usual. She tossed her wet clothes into the laundry bin her mother kept in the bathroom and then headed back out, pausing to knock on her door. Her heart was thudding rapidly in her chest, hardly able to believe this was happening. Sophia was here. In her house. In her room of all places, which, thankfully, Ember didn't really have anything embarrassing in. She'd plastered the wall above her bed with pictures of course, and there old comic books on her shelves and she was pretty sure she'd left some books on Herbology out on her desk, an absolute dork when it came to plants, not that Sophia knew that particular thing about her yet. Eveleen and her mother did, but that was only because her mum had raised her among the flowers and she'd always talked to Eveleen about things, even the embarrassing ones. It wouldn't have done her badass cred any good for people to know she loved such a girly thing like flowers. ”Come out when you're ready, Mouse.”
Trailing the rest of the way down the hallway in yet another pair of jean shorts and a tank top, Ember ran into her mother coming out of her own room, now all dry. She was quickly bundled up in a tight hug, kisses being planted on her forehead as her mother embraced her.
”I missed you, my reckless girl.” Meghan sighed, releasing her daughter and looking her over, inspecting her for any new bruises or injuries she might have missed and not finding any. ”Now help me set the table.”
Ember nodded, drinking in the wonderful hug, the feeling of being so genuinely loved and cared about before she did as her mother asked. She tugged plates out of the cupboard and began bringing them to the table, setting three places, one at one head, and then the two on the side, leaving a blank spot at the remaining head where her father used to sit. Meghan levitated over the serving dishes, rice and chicken with freshly cooked vegetables straight from the back garden.
