Her entire Hogwarts career, Alkawari felt like a fly in a milk bottle. Her accent, her skin, her magic, even her name made her stand out. Some dim witches and wizards felt different, equated to bad and met the Australia native with animosity for it, expecting that bullying the girl would be easy, them having greater numbers than she alone. They thought wrong. Since then, Alkawari treated those as they treated her. Pompous airs, were met with pompous airs, hostility with hostility, and kindness with Alkawari's odd sort of kindness.
This throwing back what was thrown at her worked for Alkawari for some time, that was until last week in Arithmancy. As if the class wasn't bad enough, Professor Vaus had assigned a partner project of examining the numerical worth in a partner's name and based on those numbers how well they get along. Though Alkawari was shit at numbers, that wasn't the bad part. What was bad was that she got partnered with Aito Bellamy. The boy was anomaly. He did things strangely, but unlike the foreigner he was from the U.K. He chose to be different. Alkawari didn't understand and because of that she was set on edge and didn't want to respond to his kindness with her own.
This resulted in the following: a very awkward silence between the two at a small table in the Library. Alkawari was hesitant to speak, not knowing what to say. She couldn't tell him she didn't like him, but she didn't want to make him think she liked him either. So she laid silent in waiting, biding her time till the boy with snow skin got fed up with her and she could lash back.
