Summer's a Bummer, as Dull as Can Be... or is it?

Olivia watched as Rodina finished with her things, eyeing the necklace curiously. It was pretty and she rarely saw jewelry of any sort on a girl almost as young as she was, so she found a little bit strange, but then, she supposed it wasn’t. She just wasn’t used to it. Smiling as Rodina turned back to her, Olivia felt quite happy. Rodina wasn’t abandoning her just yet, in fact, she seemed to be excited about going off to do things. Together. Olivia’s rabbit fell limp in her lap as Rodina took her hands, and then onto the floor as the older girl led her in jumping up and down a few times. This was something new as well. She had seen it, but never participated in the joyful hopping that was being a little girl. Sometimes even a teenager too. It made her feel blessedly normal for a few moments, like she was getting a peek of what it would be like to truly have an actual friend instead of just one who was probably only going to last part of the day.
Olivia bent down, grabbing up her rabbit just as Rodina began to tug her along. She followed, her shorter legs keeping up the best they could again, though she wasn’t nearly as hot now as she had been earlier. Taking off her sweater had been a wise decision to make apparently, and despite feeling a bit lost without it, the rest of her was a lot cooler in just her camp t-shirt. Rodina seemed excited now, but earlier, when the counselor had said something more about the bonfire, Olivia had quickly noted the way the older girl’s face changed. She made a note to herself to try and inquire about it later, perhaps if they found a moment alone. It would be unlikely with so many other children swarming about the grounds, but there was always a slim chance. And that was if Rodina wanted to stick with her in the first place. Olivia wouldn’t blame her if she didn’t. She was used to being by herself more than she was being around another person.
When they arrived at the mess hall, Olivia followed after Rodina, watching as the blonde picked out her snacks, and then followed suit. She opted out of the crackers and trail mix, aiming instead for a baggy of grapes, a cheese stick, and, last moment, a couple of carrot sticks. She held up the carrot sticks and her rabbit to show Rodina, hoping, maybe, they would get to see some real bunnies. Olivia had never seen a real one aside from when she passed the pet shop on the way to school and they had had a couple in the window for a bit. They’d soon been replaced by a bunch of kittens though. Olivia placed the cheese and carrot sticks in one of her large skirt pockets before zipping it shut and opening her little baggy of grapes. She popped one into her mouth, glad they were the purple crunchy kind and not the squishy big green kind that she didn’t like. She paused, eyes falling on the juice boxes before she grabbed a couple of those as well, one of each of them. She paused, deliberating for a second, grapes and a juice box in one hand, her rabbit and the other boxed juice in the other. She nodded to herself and stuck one box in each pocket, shifting the snacks so she had carrot sticks in one and the cheese stick in the other. There, now they were more evenly weighted and, though they pulled down at her skirt, it was tight enough around her waist not to come free on it’s own.
As Rodina held up the map and pointed to the trail with the creek, she nodded. She liked the sound creeks made, flowing sweetly, usually shallow and perfectly safe compared to lakes and pools. And as there was a bridge, they wouldn’t even have to get their feet wet if they chose not to. It would be fun. Smiling, Olivia hugged her rabbit closer to her chest and then held her hand out to Rodina. So long as the other girl seemed to want to be around her, Olivia was going to try her hardest to keep it that way.
