Summer's a Bummer, as Dull as Can Be... or is it?

Olivia flopped down in the sand beside Rodina, not minding that they were sitting a good bit further back from the rest of their cabin group. They were still close enough that no one told them to move closer, and Olivia would rather be with mostly just Rodina anyway. The blonde girl was her friend, the only one she had ever had in her entire life, and right now, she wasn't looking too good. Rodina had been bold and energetic the entire day up until this point with the bonfire coming into play. After having heard the older girl's story on the trail, Olivia more than understood Rodina's need to stay back from the fire, of not wanting to get any closer than they absolutely had to because for her, the fire was an enemy.
The younger of the pair sat quietly, gripping onto Rodina's hand firmly and keeping her rabbit safely in her lap as she used her other hand to take the plate she was handed. She didn't even give a smile of thanks, her mind too distracted by the girl next to her. Olivia wished a great deal that there was something she could do in order to put Rodina's mind at ease, but the most she could think of was to just be there with her. Hopefully they wouldn't have to be around the fire for too long, though, Olivia knew it was probably going to take a good while. It was supposed to be a celebration of the beginning of camp. Dinner, and s'mores, and songs, and maybe even a ghost story. Maybe an hour or a little more, hopefully not exceptionally long, because Olivia was pretty certain, juding by the current state of Rodina's pallor, that the other girl would not be able to handle this for too long.
Olivia chewed at her dinner, eating it slowly, kind of like a bird might. She wasn't exceptionally hungry after the amount of grapes she'd consumed earlier, and she still had that juice box and cheese stick in her pocket. Pondering it over, she took out the cheese stick, knowing it probably wouldn't stay good for much longer and go to waste if she didn't eat it now. She unwrapped it, placed the plastic back in her pocket, and split the thing in half. She reached, setting one bit on Rodina's plate before shoving the other in her mouth. Olivia scooted closer to the other girl, moving until their shoulders were pressed together, attempting to giver her an extra bit of comfort. Had she been one for using words, Olivia probably would have kept up a steady stream of reassurances, however, she was not, and all she could do, was be there.
As the counselor handed out marshmallows, Olivia took hers with a slight smile. She had actually been quite looking forward to the s’mores, rarely getting them at the home. The only time she could remember having made them, was probably in that one nice foster home that had had a couple of other kids in it when she’d still been pretty little. She had loved holding the stick out over the flames with the marshmallow on the end, not even caring when it caught fire. And yet… as Olivia glanced over at her new friend, who was telling her to go, the younger girl paused. It wasn’t fair that Rodina was afraid of fire, not because it meant Olivia had to sit so far back, but because the other girl had to suffer through being stuck here when she was so obviously fearful. Having to be exposed to something that made you scared and having no other option… It was awful. No. Olivia shook her head, reaching out and taking up the crackers and chocolate the counselor had placed down on their plates. She assembled two uncooked s’mores after extracting the marshmallow from Rodina’s hand. She pushed the plate towards her friend and then took a bite out of her own, not caring that it wasn’t cooked. Who needed to get sticky and gooey anyway, especially surrounded by so much sand?
Olivia wrapped her arms tightly around Rodina for a moment, frowning at how pale the other girl looked. No. This wouldn’t do…
Pushing to her feet, Olivia left Rodina for a moment, still clutching her rabbit, eyes scanning until they locked on their counselor who was currently still giving out marshmallows. She strode forward and tugged at the woman’s shirt, gazing up at her with wide eyes and scrunching her face a bit. She wrapped on arm tightly around her stomach as the woman turned around to look at her. Olivia puffed out her cheeks and tried to look as impossibly miserable as possible.
”Are you alright, Olivia?”[/b] The woman asked, her brow wrinkling with concern. It was fairly common for children to suddenly catch ill, especially when they were far away from home like this, so she had seen plenty of upset stomachs before.
Olivia shook her head and then pointed back in the direction of the cabins, her eyes pleading. The woman frowned and then heaved a sigh. ”Alright, yeah, you can go lie down. But you can’t go by yourself… hold on, let’s find someone willing to go with you.”[/I]
At that, Olivia nodded and then pointed firmly to Rodina, grabbed hold of the woman’s arm, and tugged, marching back towards her partner with purpose. The woman blinked, looking a bit taken aback, but crouched down anyway. Of course the kid would want her camp buddy to go with her. But then, it wouldn’t be fair to her camp buddy to have to miss out on the fun… ”Hey Rodina. I hate to ask this, but Olivia seems to not be feeling very well. Would you mind going back to the cabin with her? If not, I can try and find someone else, but I have to stay here to keep an eye on the other girls.”[/I]
