"Put that out wouldn't you." Eveleen complained to the girl lounging on her bed lazily.
"Relax. Want some." The girl offered. Eveleen turned to her with a frown and the girl laughed tossing a head of sleek straight dark red hair. She knew Eveleen didn't smoke, in fact Lexy knew a lot about Eveleen. They had been friends longer than either could remember just as their mothers had been. When the two older woman went out, it was always Eveleen and Lexy left to their own devices. It had always been that way, Eveleen and Lexy. Eveleen and Lexy. Eveleen and Lexy. The two were vastly different, the red head taking right after the type of woman Eveleen sought to distance herself from, but habit dies hard Eveleen supposed. In a sense Eveleen felt bad for Lexy, she didn't really have a choice, this life their mothers lived, partying, men, pills in the medicine cabinet with other people's names on them, they were all Lexy knew. Eveleen had Hogwarts, she had Ember, she had Du-
"That stuff will kill you." Eveleen told her for the millionth time since they were twelve. Lexy laughed again and laid back on the pillows.
"That's why I do it" She replied deepening Eveleen's frown because even though the girl laughed as if it was a joke Eveleen could hear the truth in it. The witch sighed and pulled her shirt on before inclining her head to the door.
"Let's go." Eveleen said though she sounded defeated. Lexy gave a squeal of delight and jumped up off the bed, hugging Eveleen.
"I'm so glad you're coming!" Lexy sang. Eveleen simply nodded, herself being less than excited. Eveleen liked to dance, but the party she was going to, the ones people like Lexy frequented were not the type Eveleen liked. They weren't like the ones at Hogwarts that often got shut down by teachers, house parties didn't stop till the sun or the police got involved. Bad things more often than not happened at them, fights, sometimes shooting considering it was Brixton after all.
The two girls walked down the hall and into the living room where Andy was waiting. Andy was a friend as well but nothing like Lexy. He had the misfortune of meeting the two girls in elementary school and since then Lexy had enslaved the poor thing. He was nerdy, obsessive and Eveleen was sure something was loose in that head of his.
"Oh Andy you're so smart" Eveleen heard her mother giggle and the girl rolled her eyes.
"We're leaving now." Eveleen told the boy on her couch who's pale eyes were trailing after her mother's curvy form clad in a tight cheetah print dress.
"Oh bye babies. Have fun." Mary said wrapping her arms around Eveleen and kissing her daughter's forehead. Eveleen looked to her mother's identical brown eyes wishing for once Mary would help her out, forbid her from going to this party. Perhaps act like a normal parent and try and stop her daughter from going out and getting smashed in an effort to crush the heart break. No such thing would happen though and everyone in the room knew that.
"Bye Mary." Eveleen replied as the three teenagers left the apartment and set for the party down the street. As they walked Eveleen turned herself on auto pilot let herself be pulled along by Lexy. She wasn't in the mood for a party, she wasn't really in the mood for anything since her fight with Duane but after spending the holidays drowning in her own pity, Eveleen resolved she would make herself do something, even if it was something incredibly stupid.
"Lexy told me you had a bad break up" Andy finally said as Lexy went up to a door of an old brown stone and knocked. It took a moment for Eveleen to respond, pulling herself out of her own haze but soon her dark eyes flickered up to Andy's.
"It was inevitable. We were too different." Eveleen told him gently with a small smile trying to cushion the harshness of her own words. That was what Eveleen eventually put the reason for their fight for rather than Duane just not knowing her enough. Even if he had known everything about her, her home life, her childhood, would he have even had stayed? Eveleen had to much shit, to much deeply hidden anger and internal conflict for another person to handle. She needed to handle her own issues and that was how it had always been.
"Everyone's different" Andy replied in a considerate voice, "It's how well your differences fit together that matters." Eveleen stared up a bit in shock at Andy's insightful words before the door ahead opened, the light pouring out and staining the night around them. Eveleen smiled at the host and moved in behind Lexy, Andy following herself.
